Atlas des Habitats des Ressources Marines de la Manche Orientale - CHARM II ArchiMer
Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Curet, Lucie; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Delavenne, Juliette; Dewarumez, Jean-marie; Dupuis, Ludovic; Foveau, Aurélie; Garcia, Clément; Gardel, Laure; Harrop, Stuart; Just, Roger; Koubbi, Philippe; Lauria, Valentina; Martin, Corinne; Meaden, Geoff; Morin, Jocelyne; Ota, Yoshi; Rostiaux, Emilie; Smith, Bob; Spilmont, Nicolas; Vaz, Sandrine; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Verin, Yves; Walton, Joanne; Warembourg, Caroline.
Readers of our first CHARM I atlas will know that almost everything contained within the atlas was original work resulting from two years of intensive study of the Dover Strait by a dedicated and inter- disciplinary team working from bases on either side of the Channel. The present atlas has carried on this eminent precedent, though this time covering the whole of the eastern English Channel (figure 1) and widening considerably the thematic scope. We believe that readers of this current atlas will be impressed by both the breadth and depth of the information provided, and that therefore this content should be available for use in both a wide variety of fields and at various levels of interest (researchers, industries, statutory organisations, the wider...

Benthic and fish aggregation inside an offshore wind farm: Which effects on the trophic web functioning? ArchiMer

As part of the energy transition, the French government is planning the construction of three offshore wind farms in Normandy (Bay of Seine and eastern part of the English Channel, north-western France) in the next years. These offshore wind farms will be integrated into an ecosystem already facing multiple anthropogenic disturbances such as maritime transport, fisheries, oyster and mussel farming, and sediment dredging. Currently no integrated, ecosystem-based study on the effects of the construction and exploitation of offshore wind farms exists, where biological approaches generally focused on the conservation of some valuable species or groups of species. Complementary trophic web modelling tools were applied to the Bay of Seine ecosystem (to the 50...

Carbon flows in a subtidal fine sand community from the western Encrlish Channel: a simulation analysis ArchiMer
Chardy, Pierre; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
Organic carbon flows through the Pierre Noire fine sand community (Bay of Morlaix, France) are described with a trophodynamic point model, Data collected during several annual cycles are used to calibrate the seasonal variations of each benthic compartment. Mean annual values of state variables are correctly simulated. In a first approach, the seasonal variations were simulated using 2 forcing functions: input of energy and temperature influence. In a second run, spawning and recruitment effects were introduced as regulating factors for the macrobenthic compartments. The resulting annual carbon budget synthesizes the information we have on this common type of ecosystem. Phytoplankton production represents the major food supply to the benthic system and the...

INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. This area is a significant resource for fisheries because many commercial fish species are abundant there, but also because of the presence of nursery and spawning areas and migratory routes linked to specific environmental characteristics. The vulnerability of these resources, which are subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures, has brought together...

Cinétique de Abra alba (Mollusque bivalve) de 1977 à 1991 en Manche-Mer du Nord, relation avec les facteurs climatiques ArchiMer
Dauvin, Jean-claude; Dewarumez, Jean-marie; Elkaim, B; Bernardo, D; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Ibanez, F.
Populations of Abra alba (Wood) (Mollusca : Bivalvia) were studied over a fifteen-years period at three sites: the southern part of the North Sea (Gravelines area), the Bay of Seine, and the Bay of Morlaix in the western English Channel. These surveys provide an example of long-term changes in a species considered as ''opportunistic'' and as a ''biological indicator'' of disturbance. A summed cumulated function was used to compare the changes of the Abra alba populations and of mean air temperature in each area. The graph of this function shows the timing and duration of changes. Four or five main periods were identified at each site, with a succession of periods of abundance, stability, and decrease. The abundance periods were separated by ten years in...

Cinétique et production de deux moulières naturelles de l'Est algérois. Influence des facteurs thermiques et anthropiques ArchiMer
Abadaboudjema, Ym; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
A long-term survey of two mussel populations from two natural mussel beds, Bordj El Kiffan and Boudouaou, was carried out from the end of 1984 to the beginning of 1991. Samples had been also collected from 1978-1979 then from 1992-1993, but only from the first of these. Maximal densities were higher than 10,000 ind. m(-2), due to the spring and summer heavy spatfall. At Bordj El Kiffan, densities of M. galloprovincialis were 50 times more important than those of P. perna. At Boudouaou, the abundance of P. perna was 1.7 times higher than that of M. galloprovincialis. From 1986 to 1988, the mean annual biomass in dry weight of tissue including ash was higher for P. perna at Boudouaou (0.886 kg. m(-2)) than at Bordj El Kiffan (0.486 kg. m(-2)). For M....

Cumulative effects of marine renewable energy and climate change on ecosystem properties: Sensitivity of ecological network analysis ArchiMer
Nogues, Quentin; Raoux, Aurore; Araignous, Emma; Chaalali, Aurelie; Hattab, Tarek; Leroy, Boris; Ben Rais Lasram, Frida; David, Valérie; Le Loch, Francois; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Niquil, Nathalie.
In an increasingly anthropogenic world, the scientific community and managers have to take interactions between the drivers of ecosystems into consideration. Tools like ecological network analysis (ENA) indices offer the opportunity to study those interactions at the ecosystem level. However, ENA indices have never been used to test the incidence of cumulative drivers. The present study uses models combining the effects of (i) the reef caused by the future offshore wind farm of Courseulles-sur-Mer and (ii) climate change on species distribution, to test the response of multiple ENA indices. ENA indices proved sensitive to this cumulative impact, displaying a wide variety of cumulative effects. They were also very powerful to characterize the role of the...

Diel changes of the Benthic Boundary Layer macrofauna over coarse sand sediment in the western English Channel ArchiMer
Zouhiri, S; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
The Benthic Boundary Layer (BBL) macrofauna over a coarse sand community at Trezen Vraz (western English Channel) was sampled with a modified Macer-GIROQ hyperbenthic sledge to analyse its diel changes on two occasions, in November 1988 (9 hauls), and in July 1990 (11 hauls). Species composition of the fauna, swimming activities, daily vertical migrations, biomass of the principal taxa, and biomass exchanges between the BBL, the benthos, and the pelages were studied. Sixty-one taxa in November and 129 taxa in July were sorted, counted, and classified into three groups: mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton, and hyperbenthos. In the mesozooplankton, copepods and crustacean larvae were very abundant in July. In the macrozooplankton, the chaetognath Sagitta...

Distribution patterns in the benthic diversity of the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Foveau, Aurelie; Desroy, Nicolas; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Dewarumez, Jean-marie.
Understanding the distribution of specific diversity is currently an important focus in marine research, and the role of marine biodiversity has been fully recognised as essential for the proper functioning of the biosphere. The objective of this study was to explain the distribution of macrobenthic taxonomic richness (vagile epifauna, endofauna and sessile epifauna) in the eastern part of the English Channel using both classical methods and applying the mid-domain effect (MDE) model. High diversity was encountered in the eastern English Channel (875 taxa), with high-diversity areas often comprising gravelly or pebbly sediments. Sessile epifauna represented 25% of this inventory, revealing the importance of this group. Our results underline the existence...

Evaluating ecosystem functioning of a long-term dumping site in the Bay of Seine (English Channel) ArchiMer
Raoux, Aurore; Baux, Noémie; Pezy, Jean-philippe; Balay, Pierre; Lesourd, Sandric; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
The impact of 70 years of dumping harbour dredged material on ecosystem functioning was compared to a control site (non-impacted zone). A combination of indices (Shannon-Wiener diversity, Pielou evenness, BO2A, AMBI benthic indices) and modelling (Ecopath models) generated Ecological Network Analysis indices were used to detect the dumping operations effects. ENA indices showed that dumping operations appear to have a relatively limited impact on the structure and flow pattern of the local food web. In fact, only small variations between the two sites are revealed by a comparison of ENA indices between the impacted and non-impacted zone. This result could be explained by the fact that the Bay of Seine is historically characterized by a high level of human...

Evaluating ecosystem-level anthropogenic impacts in a stressed transitional environment: The case of the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Tecchio, Samuele; Chaalali, Aurelie; Raoux, Aurore; Rius, Armonie Tous; Lequesne, Justine; Girardin, Valerie; Lassalle, Geraldine; Cachera, Marie; Riou, Philippe; Lobry, Jeremy; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Niquil, Nathalie.
During 2002–2005, a new container terminal in the commercial harbour of Le Havre, named “Port2000”, was built on the northern flank of the Seine estuary, northern France. This extension is already known to have modified the estuary current and sediment dynamics, as well as reducing biomass of the suprabenthos assemblage, for the whole downstream part of the system. However, studies on other biotic communities were largely inconclusive, and an ecosystem-wide analysis was still lacking. Here, we performed a before/after study of ecosystem dynamics of the different habitats of the Seine estuary, using a Linear Inverse Modelling technique (LIM-MCMC) to estimate all flows occurring in the food web. Ecological Network Analysis indices were calculated,...

First and repeated records of the tropical-temperate crab Asthenognathus atlanticus Monod, 1932 (Decapoda: Brachyura) in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel, France) ArchiMer
Jourde, Jerome; Alizier, Sandrine; Dancie, Chloe; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Desroy, Nicolas; Dubut, Severine; Gentil, Franck; Grall, Jacques; Hanin, Camille; Lanshere, Julien; Thiebaut, Eric.
Asthenognathus atlanticus Monod, 1932, has been reported for the first time from the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel). A total of 30 specimens were collected between the years 2008 and 2011, along the Normandy coast from Ouistreham to Antifer, mainly on mud and muddy sand habitats, between 10 and 25 m depth. The distribution range of A. atlanticus has been previously known to cover eastern Atlantic coasts from Angola to the western English Channel, where it reached its northern limits. It is also present in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. The changes in the sediment composition of the eastern Bay of Seine have probably led to the development of a potentially favorable habitat for this species. However, the data...

Impacts of data quality on the setting of conservation planning targets using the species-area relationship ArchiMer
Metcalfe, Kristian; Delavenne, Juliette; Garcia, Clement; Foveau, Aurelie; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Coggan, Roger; Vaz, Sandrine; Harrop, Stuart R.; Smith, Robert J..
Aim : The speciesarea relationship (SAR) is increasingly being used to set conservation targets for habitat types when designing protected area networks. This approach is transparent and scientifically defensible, but there has been little research on how it is affected by data quality and quantity. Location : English Channel. Methods : We used a macrobenthic dataset containing 1314 sampling points and assigned each point to its associated habitat type. We then used the SAR-based approach and tested whether this was influenced by changes in (i) the number of sampling points used to generate estimates of total species richness for each habitat type; (ii) the nonparametric estimator used to calculate species richness; and (iii) the level of habitat...

Isotopic analyses, a good tool to validate models in the context of Marine Renewable Energy development and cumulative impacts ArchiMer
Raoux, Aurore; Pezy, Jean-philippe; Ernande, Bruno; Niquil, Nathalie; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Grangeré, Karine.
As part of the energy transition, the French government is planning Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) constructions in the next decades. An integrated ecosystem approach of two future OWF sites of the Eastern English Channel (Courseulles-sur-mer and Dieppe-Le Tréport) was developed to model the marine ecosystems before the OWF implementation. Such ecosystem models allow simulating the possible reef and reserve effects associated to the presence of the farm, and to character the overall changes in the food-web functioning. This holistic view of OWF effects could be replicated on other sites and form the basis of an ecosystem based management of marine renewable energies. However, to use these models for management purpose, they need to be validated. In order to do...

Long-term variations of four macrobenthic community structures ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Ibanez, F; Dewarumez, Jean-marie; Elkaim, B.
This study examines whether meso-scale meteorological events, in particular the alternation of cold and mild periods, influenced the structure of four Abi cr alba communities, sampled from 1977 to 1992 on the northwest French coast. We propose a new numerical procedure to describe temporal variations in the structure of each assemblage, using some niche-oriented models recently developed by Tokeshi (1993). The description of the temporal changes in the structure of each community was summarized into a 2D-plot of an ordination, performed on observed and simulated patterns. Results showed that important changes occurred in these four assemblages, which were not directly related to the meso-scale climatic events, but mainly to the local environmental factors...

Based on a parallel sampling conducted during autumn 2008, a comparative study of the intertidal benthic macrofauna among 10 estuarine systems located along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France was performed in order to assess the level of fauna similarity among these sites and to identify possible environmental factors involved in the observed pattern at both large (among sites) and smaller (benthic assemblages) scales. More precisely this study focused on unraveling the observed pattern of intertidal benthic fauna composition and diversity observed at among-sites scale by exploring both biotic and abiotic factors acting at the among- and within-site scales. Results showed limited level of similarity at the among-site level in terms of intertidal...

The tanaidacean crustacean, Zeuxo holdichi was first described from Arcachon Bay, France, by Bamber in 1990. Since then, this species has been recorded several times in Europe, from Iberian Peninsula to Germany. In this present study, we report new records of this species along the northern coasts of France bordering the English Channel. It is hypothesized that Z. holdichi is being spread because of aquaculture activities.
